Metodi Matakiev was born in 1949 in Sofia. He graduated from the National Music Academy in 1973 with a major in choral conducting, and studied operatic-symphonic conducting in Vienna in 1983. In the subsequent years, Metodi Matakiev worked as the conductor of the National Philharmonic Chorus “Sv. Obretenov” and for the National Opera of Sofia. During 1996-1998, he was the principal conductor of the National Opera of Russe.

Since October 1998, he has headed the chorus of the Bulgarian National Radio. His recordings include Lohengrin, Tosca, Nabucco, the Mozart Requiem, as well as operatic recitals by Darina Takova, Nikola Gjuzelev and Kaludi Kaludov. For the music fund of the National Radio, Metodi Matakiev has contributed recordings of many arias, ensembles, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, choruses from operas and a cappella works. His repertory consists of 25 operas as well as cantatas, oratorios and symphonies. He has extensively toured Europe and the USA. He taught choral conducting in the National Music Academy (1977-1988), and in the summer of 2002, he taught a course in operatic conducting in Karlovi Vari in the Czech Republic. In 2001 he received the Crystal Lira Award of the National Music Practitioners Union for Excellence in Conducting.
